Does ReceiptIQ AI work with Japanese receipts (レシート)?

September 30, 2026 · ReceiptIQ AI · Xinzhou Liu

Short answer: Yes. ReceiptIQ AI reads a Japanese receipt as Japanese whatever language the app is set to, handles yen without decimals, 内税 and 外税 consumption tax and 8 % and 10 % on one receipt, and files 消費税 under 税金. The app is also in Japanese, with 家計簿 category names and a month that can start on payday (締め日).

How a Japanese receipt is read

Japanese is detected from the receipt, not from the app language

The app works out which script a receipt is printed in and then reads it in that script. With the app set to English, a Japanese receipt is still read as Japanese, kana and kanji included; there is no setting to change. Text recognition runs on the iPhone.

Yen has no decimals

A yen amount counts as a price when it has a ¥ or ¥ in front, 円 after it, or a thousands comma. A bare whole number is treated as a quantity or a terminal number, not a price. Since Sep 17 2026 the yen is also a home currency you can pick; before that, a Japanese user's yen receipts were converted to dollars.

合計 is the total; お預り and お釣り are not

The total is read from the 合計 line. 小計 is a subtotal, and お預り (cash handed over) and お釣り (change) are payment lines. They are not taken as the total.

内税 and 外税: consumption tax is not counted twice

Two real receipts from the developer's March 2026 trip show both cases with the full receipt text: a tax-included drugstore receipt (Matsumoto Kiyoshi, ¥392: water ¥95 as 食費, wipes ¥297 as 医療・健康) and a tax-exclusive Daiso receipt (¥700 of goods plus ¥70 tax = ¥770). They are on Japanese Receipt Scanner for iPhone; they are not copied here.

Household-book categories

Since version 2.4.3 the Japanese app shows the category names of a standard 家計簿: 食費, 日用品, 交通費, 住居・光熱費, 衣服・美容, 医療・健康, 趣味・娯楽, 家電・デジタル, 旅行・レジャー, 交際費, 教育・保育, 住まい・家具 and 税金. Since 2.4.4 the Japanese app also has 通信費 (phone and internet), 特別費 and こづかい as defaults; these three are created only when the app language is Japanese. The AI files 通信費 bills itself but never guesses 特別費 or こづかい; those are yours to assign.

Each item gets its own category. On a Japanese drugstore receipt replayed through the production scanner on Sep 27 2026, cleaning goods came out as 日用品, plasters and ointment as 医療・健康, noodles and snacks as 食費, and the 消費税 line as 税金.

The month can start on payday (締め日)

Many Japanese households keep the 家計簿 from payday to payday. In Settings → Receipts & Money → Budgets & Recurring there is "Month starts on" (締め日), with a day from 1 to 28. A period is named after the month that holds most of its days: 25 September to 24 October is October. Day 1 gives the normal calendar month.

How it is tested

Before every release the scanner is run against a fixed set of receipts, and a release is blocked if one gets worse. The Japanese part is 141 receipts: 119 from a public Japanese receipt dataset and 22 photographed on the developer's own trips. On Sep 8 2026, 116 of the 119 public-dataset receipts passed the gate's checks. Two rules in that work are specific to Japan: a change amount that appears only on a change or cash-tendered line (お釣, 現計) is never taken as tax or total, and a 合計 that is printed once is enough to be the total on a tax-exclusive receipt.

Price

The first 30 receipts (manual entries included) are free, no account needed. Then Premium is ¥300 per month or ¥2,500 per year in the Japanese App Store. iPhone only.

Limits

The photo stays on the iPhone and only the recognised text is sent: Does ReceiptIQ AI upload my receipt photos? Japanese-language pages: 日本語版, レシートで家計簿.

Frequently asked questions

Does ReceiptIQ AI read Japanese receipts if the app is set to English?

Yes. The app works out the script printed on the receipt and reads it as Japanese, kana and kanji included, whatever the app language is.

How does it handle 内税 and 外税?

On a tax-included (内税) receipt the printed consumption tax is not added as an extra item. On a tax-excluded (外税) receipt the tax is kept as its own 消費税 line, so the items add up to the 合計. In the Japanese app the tax category is 税金.

Does it read お預り or お釣り as the total?

No. The total is read from the 合計 line. 小計 is a subtotal, and お預り and お釣り are payment lines.

Can the month start on payday?

Yes. Settings, Receipts & Money, Budgets & Recurring, Month starts on (締め日), day 1 to 28. Day 1 is the normal calendar month.

How many Japanese receipts are in the release test set?

141: 119 from a public Japanese receipt dataset and 22 photographed on the developer's own trips. A release is blocked if one of them gets worse.
