Family Expense Sharing — Without Putting Your Finances in the Cloud

Short answer: ReceiptIQ lets up to 4 family iPhones share receipts, categories, and budgets with no cloud involved at all — the phones sync directly with each other over your home WiFi, one subscription covers everyone, and family members join free by scanning a QR code. As far as we know, no other expense tracker offers family sharing without a server holding the family's data.

Why "no cloud" matters for a household's finances

A family's combined receipts are an unusually complete picture of a life: where you shop, what you buy, what you earn, when you're home. Most shared-expense apps work by uploading all of it to the company's servers — that's what makes the sharing work, and it's also a database of your household that exists forever, somewhere, under someone else's security practices. ReceiptIQ's family sharing was designed backwards from a different premise: the sharing should work like handing a receipt across the kitchen table. Between your devices, in your house, and nowhere else.

How it works

• One subscription, up to 4 devices. The subscriber creates a family; everyone else joins free and gets full premium while they're in it.
• Joining is a QR code. Install the app, tap Join, point the camera at the owner's screen. The QR contains nothing sensitive — a screenshot of it is useless, because joining requires a live device-to-device handshake with the owner's phone.
• Syncing is device-to-device. Receipts, categories, and budgets move between the family's phones over your WiFi using peer-to-peer networking, verified with Apple's own cryptographic signatures. There is no account to create and no server anywhere in the design — we couldn't read your family's data if we wanted to.
• Everyone sees the whole picture. Your partner scans groceries, you see them; you set the dining budget, they see it. One shared, private household ledger.

The honest trade-offs

• Syncing needs the phones open on the same network — there's no server to relay changes while someone's phone is off. In practice, a household's phones meet on the home WiFi daily, and a "Sync Now" button plus automatic opportunistic syncing covers the rest.
• There's no web dashboard of the family's data — by design.
